Koh Samui, jewel of the
Gulf of Siam, currently finds itself in
a strange position: while tourism
increases and becomes more up-market,
and the island becomes an increasingly
desirable place for Westerners to retire
to, there are, lurking beneath the
idyllic surface, great problems of an
infra-structural nature. This was
brought home recently with the
end-of-November rains, which happened to
coincide with a high tide at sea. The
water had nowhere to go.
Appalling drainage and a lack of
vegetation to absorb the torrential
downpours caused most coastal areas of
Samui to be seriously flooded. In the
wake of the flooding, unprecedented
damage appeared in most of the main
resorts, as well as on the Ring Road,
where large chunks of this artery
dissolved, leaving ruts and holes that
will take precious time to repair. And
while the tourist industry struggled to
get to its feet in time for high season,
we were informed that there would be
necessary power cuts for the whole week
before Christmas. This demonstrated
perfectly the lack of communication
between tourism and local government.
While we try to uphold the standards
that have made Samui the biggest earner
(for its size) of tourist money in the
country, we find that desperately needed
measures are simply not there to support
our efforts. The floods and power-cuts
are but the tip of the iceberg.
